In the 1960s, as certain musicians began to gain more control over the production of their commerical recordings, they sometimes took a new approach to liner notes, dispensing with them entirely, enlisting friends or associates outside the critcial establishment to write them, or writing them themselves. Makanda Ken McIntyre took the latter approach, seeing his album notes as an opportunity to provide personal insight into his own music as well as to present his analysis of American society and the music business. Presented here are Makanda's liner notes for his Prestige, United Artists, and Steeplechase recordings. Also included are liner notes by Michael Cuscuna, Ira Gitler, Joe Goldberg, and Tim Price.
